New York Pedestrian Accidents

The state of New York is home to 19.5 million people and more than 10.5 million registered vehicles. Unfortunately, this combination can make the state a dangerous place for pedestrians. In 2007, the latest year for which complete data is available, more than 15,000 pedestrians were involved in vehicle accidents. Of these, 272 pedestrians lost their lives in NY.

When a pedestrian is injured because of the fault, carelessness or negligence of another person, our laws entitle the victim to seek compensation for their injuries from the responsible parties. But doing so requires a competent New York pedestrian accident attorney who knows how to investigate an accident and provide skillful representation throughout the legal process.

The causes and types of pedestrian accidents vary widely. These are some of the most common reported by the New York Department of Motor Vehicles for 2007.

  • Single Vehicle Accidents. The majority of pedestrian accidents involved only one vehicle. A total of 15,075 pedestrian accidents, or about 96 percent, involved one vehicle. These accidents produced 14,810 injuries and 245 deaths.
  • Two Vehicle Accidents. A total of 461 pedestrian accidents involved two vehicles. This accounted for 2.9 percent of all pedestrian accidents. Of these two-vehicle pedestrian accidents, 19 were fatal.
  • Pedestrian Accidents with Three or More Vehicles. Pedestrian accidents involving more than two vehicles accounted for only 1.1 percent of all pedestrian accidents. A total of 165 of these accidents occurred, including 13 accidents that were fatal.
  • Large Truck Accidents. The number of pedestrians involved in large truck accidents was reported at 263. These accidents resulted in 246 injuries and 19 deaths.

The location of New York State pedestrian accidents was also catalogued for 2007:  municipal streets -- 11,999: state routes --  1,305; unknown --  1,057; town routes --  851; county routes --  366; parkways --  54; other interstates --  47; thruways --  22.

Whatever the cause or location, pedestrian accidents often result in severe injuries. Worse, many pedestrians are injured in hit-and-run accidents where drivers flee the accident scene. In these situations, a talented and experienced NY pedestrian injury attorney is required to conduct a thorough investigation and determine the responsible party.

When a pedestrian is injured or killed in a vehicle accident, the aftermath can be overwhelming for the victim and their family. Pedestrian injures often require extensive medical treatment that can leave individuals and families with significant expenses. The qualified NY pedestrian accident lawyers listed on this page can guide you through the complex legal procedures and work to secure the fair compensation that you and your family deserve.
